All guitarists and guitar students must eventually learn how to play using guitar tabs. Guitar tabs are different from guitar chords. Chords usually use the chord letters to indicate how the music must be played. Guitar tabs more or less illustrate the positioning or the placement of the fingers to achieve the desired sound.

A guitar tab basically consists of six horizontal lines, these lines are meant to stand for the six strings of the guitar. Although this system may seem intimidating at first, many students actually find it easier to learn through guitar tabs. For example, if in the second string you find the number 3, then this means you should press the second string within the third fret.
However, to be able to really play the guitar, the tab will tell you to play several strings simultaneously. This simultaneous playing of different strings will form your chords.

One of the major problems with tabs is that it doesn't include rythmic notation. Simply put, even though you know what chord you should play, you basically have no idea how long you should hold down that chord. So to be able to play effectively, you need to have heard the song you're playing in order to do the correct rhythm.
Another problem that some people find with guitar tabs is, well, it's exclusive for guitars. So if you're planning to play with, say, a pianist, there will definitely be some communication problems.
